When Bill O'Reilly is your general...

...it should be a sign you are fighting the wrong war. Read this (somewhat misguided) article about Fox News blowhard Bill O'Reilly "defending Christmas" by saying:

“Why do they loathe the baby Jesus? He’s just a baby…How do you sell atheism by running down a baby? It’s just a baby.”

That is how you "defend" Christmas? Saying that the infant Christ is "just a baby"? No one with the vaguest understanding of the incarnation thinks Jesus was "just a baby". Bill, go back to whatever else you were doing. Jesus Christ doesn't need you to defend Him. In fact, I would go so far as to say that O'Reilly and other "culture warriors" are not interested in Jesus Christ, they are interested in propagating a religious system. If that is what you want, fine. Just don't try to drag Jesus Christ into it.

We are fighting the culture war for the wrong reason, with the wrong method and led by the wrong people. If an atheist wants to run an anti-Christmas ad, let them. Lets talk about who Jesus Christ really is and what He really did and what following Him really means. If God can change the heart of Saul, He can change the heart of an atheist. Banning "Christmas" from public schools is meaningless. They deny God all year so why should they roll out the religious tradition each winter? The last thing a Christian should want is a secular institution like a public school to lead their kids in prayer or propagate a religious tradition essentially devoid of any real meaning.

What self-appointed culture warriors like Bill O'Reilly are defending is a farcical view that America is best served by a religious culturalism that demands no sacrifice and only demands external expressions. It is a religion designed to foster cultural stability, not changed lives. I want no part of it.

I've heard Bill O'Reilly speak on matters of God and faith, and quite frankly... I don't think he has a clue.

Steve,

Me too. Whenever he speaks about matters of faith, he clearly has no idea what he is talking about. Anne Coulter is the same way, i heard her asked about her faith one time and she coulnd't give even a quasi-coherent answer.

Right.

To be fair. There are some in my own congregation who would also be at a loss to give a coherent answer.

The Holy Spirit really does create faith, when and where He wills.
