Politics and faith from across the pond

radref: Do Tories Make Bad Christians?

Phil writing at radref asks if Tories (sort of the British equivalent of the GOP) make bad Christians. It is ironic because, as I commented, we have the same conversations from the other direction in America asking if a person can vote for Democrats and be in good standing with God. I don't think it is much of a stretch to suggest that open support for Barack Obama might be cause for church discipline in some local congregations. I find it increasingly interesting to see the view of many topics taken by other Christians around the world. We live in quite the religious bubble here in the good old U.S. of A.!

Thanks. What you say is an insight in the crossover between church and politics in America. I suspect there are some incoming American members of our Mennonite congregation here in the UK who received quite a shock when they realize what a bunch of subversive radicals they were joining. Empires are often insular, because we frequently make the rules. The British Empire did exactly the same thing via our colonial legacy.

I agree with you completely about 'views' and 'bubbles'. Connecting across frontiers has great transformative power.
