The Not-So Golden Compass

One of the big movies for the holiday seasons is The Golden Compass, based on the series of books by Phillip Pullman. It looks, at least from the previews, visually stunning and has some serious star power with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. In this case however, big stars and lots of hype did not translate into big $$$...from Yahoo Entertainment....

'Compass' Opens to Modest $26.1 MillionSunday December 9 2:13 PM ET

"The Golden Compass" proved a mild fantasy at the box office, pulling in $26.1 million, a modest opening weekend compared to such recent December heavyweights as "
The Lord of the Rings" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" flicks...

New Line, which had enormous success with its three "Lord of the Rings" films, had hoped for more out of "The Golden Compass," expecting it to reach at least $30 million domestically over its first weekend, said Rolf Mittweg, the studio's marketing chief. The film cost $180 million to make.

Dr. Albert Mohler, as usual, has a very sober and well thought out review and recommendation for Christians. It boils down to this, screaming mad protest and frothing at the mouth is not the way to go. All that does is drive curiousity seekers to the movie. But the Christian should seek rather to be informed, and if we are well informed we will make an equally well thought out decision to not support this movie. Money talks far louder than placards and screaming protestors. And it looks like for the most part, money has talked loud and clear. It is my hope that Christian parents will read intelligent reviews like Dr. Mohler's, recognize the anti-Christian worldview of people like Phillip Pullman and simply choose to make their statement by being more discerning with the entertainment choices.
