Great question. I do think it is possible to have one's soteriology right and still not understand the gospel. By this I mean, one can have intellectual assent to the facts and still be unregenerate. I'm going to think about the question you conclude with. My initial thought is no. The gospel may be summed up several ways, like...God saves sinners, Christ came to save sinners who can't save themselves, etc.
But to say it may be summed up "by a proper understanding of soteriology" seems to hinge it on the "understanding."
Les, that is kind of what I am getting at. Can we truly be said to understand the Gospel without an understanding of the necessary implications of the Gospel?
I can read all about Albert Einstein, know his life, his theories, all these things, but I will still never KNOW him. Kind of a simple, non-scholarly response, but that's how I've always thought of it.
