Where is the focus?

When some churches gather, the central focus is on an altar where the minister performs the rituals of Communion or the Eucharist or the Lord's Supper. That act is the central focus of the gathering of the church.

In some churches, the central focus is on a pulpit where the minister delivers an oratory called the sermon. The sermon is the central focus of the gathering of the church.

In both styles a man up front and what he is doing is the focal point of the church gathering.

Shouldn't the central focus be on Jesus Christ?

Just wondering....

In the Old Covenant, the focus of the Altar, principally, was what it provided, atonement. Those who participated in the offering, received redemption, and thus, celebrate in the eating of the sacrifice following the offering.

In the New Covenant, the focus of the Altar (The Cross), principally, was what it provided, redemption. Those who participated in the offering (Being grafted in), and thus celebrate in the eating of the sacrifice (this is my body/blood)following the offering.

But that might just be too simple. Sue me.
