Carl Olson is beating that tired old drum again...
Once more Olson is using the venerable pages of the National Review Online to attack the Left Behind book series. Now he has somehow made a connection between the DaVinci Code and Left Behind, labelling them both (get this) : "neo-Gnostic mythologies based on radical interpretations of ancient texts." Like so who lack a substantive argument, Olson weaves together some fancy sounding theological terms to try to bafle people. "Wow, he said it was "neo-Gnostic"! That sure sounds impressive, so he must know what he is talkin' about!" Nowhere in the poorly written Left Behind books do we find the authors suggesting some special knowledge. Rather they ***GASP***!!! read the Bible to find knowledge. You may or may not agree with their conclusions, but they do know something of what they speak.
Now to Olson, the radical fictional departure of the DaVinci Code is analogous to the literal reading of Revelation by LeHaye and Jenkins. Eventually of course, we get to the crux of Olson's beef with both books: they dare question Roman Catholicism. Like so many Catholics, Olson blindly stumbles along with the party line, wondering why anyone wouldn't "...seriously examine what a 2,000-year-old institution states about what is true or false"
Perhaps he should check his church history, the Catholic church as it appears today bears little resemblance to it's ancient predecessor and no resemblance at all to the Church as seen in the Bible. Perhaps it is because we have looked at the pronouncements of the Catholic church in light of the Scripture and found Catholicism to be a Biblically unsound belief system. Perhaps we trust in Christ as the great mediator, not Mary, not the Pope and not some priest.
