Christopher Dryden referred me to an interview by Trevin Wax regarding James K.A. Smith’s book Desiring the Kingdom: Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation. Very interesting interview. I especially am intrigued by Dr. Smith’s concept of secular liturgies that surround us and form our worldview and perhaps even override what we know from Scripture. In other words, we are so infused with the liturgy of the culture that it is what forms our worldview even when it runs up against what we intellectually know from the Bible.
I don’t necessarily agree that there is a “There is a wisdom, a “genius,” embedded in the historic practices of Christian worship – as affirmed by the Reformers – that we have almost completely forgotten. We need to remember how to “do church,” as it were.” but still I appreciate that Dr. Smith and Trevin are asking the questions that bedevil the church and are ignored by so many people. I found both Mr. Smith’s book and Trevin’s upcoming book Holy Subversion intriguing and maybe deserving of a read. You should check out the interview.
