Today is Memorial Day in the United Sates and as a people we are going to be remembering those who died fighting for America.
Let those of us who know and are known by Christ remember that our freedom was not won or preserved by those buried under a field of crosses in Normandy Cemetery in France, as noble and heroic as their sacrifice was. Our freedom was won on a single cross on Calvary. Our declaration of independence is not found on a parchment in Washington, D.C., it is in the words cried out by our Savior "It is finished!"
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:36)

I don't know many Christians who believe this way though I myself have for many many years. It is not that I am unpatriotic, but rather that I have died to myself and live for Christ. Saying the pledge of allegiance is difficult simply because of that identity in Christ. That said, as I have studied and read about our culture and others around the world, ours is the first to fully stand for liberty and freedom and from the beginning, encouraged people to morality and recognition of our lives being given by God Himself. If even the founders recognized the importance of freedom of religion and morality, then it is up to us as Christian believers to continue to this generation today to spread the gospel of Christ and His great love for us. As you pointed out, freedom is found in Christ alone. Kevin Haislip
