On Having An Adult Child

My oldest child turns 18 today and just writing those words is hard. It is not that “time flew by” but that it seemed like everything in our family, in spite of the moves and changes through the years, stayed very static. No matter what was going on outside of our home, the family was still the same. Ever growing both in number and size but the same. With the auspicious event of my eldest turning 18 and crossing that imaginary and arbitrary legal line into adulthood, things are clearly changing. With these changes comes the necessary adjustments to having another adult in the house. Not sure what that means yet but we are navigating through the college process at our local community college for a start.

So we will see. Some other people my age are just starting to have kids and here we have one that can vote against President Obama in the next election! Unsettled and unsettling waters to be certain but in this as in all things our hope and trust resides in Christ.

Happy Birthday Caitlin! I love you more than you will ever know (until you have kids of your own!)

Arthur,

I must be old. My eldest is a grandmother.
